The word "Alchemy" originates from the Arabic 'al-kīmīya', meaning "chemistry," and in its deepest essence, represents the science of human transmutation. Removing the veil of legend that surrounds alchemy, we realize it is not about physically manipulating mysterious substances in some obscure, hidden laboratory.
Once we understand this, it becomes clear that all the symbolic systems used to describe alchemy actually represent the same inner processes that must take place within each of us. The three most well-known symbolic systems in alchemy are:
- The system of seven substances,
- The system of the seven metals, and
- The system of the seven celestial bodies.
There are countless correlations we can draw between these aspects. However, to become true alchemists, we must go far beyond intellectual understanding, emotional enchantment, or elevated contemplation. We must apply alchemy within ourselves and understand what we need to accomplish in the practice of our lives.
To achieve this, we must set aside the old symbolic systems and use more direct language to describe what truly needs to be transmuted within us through the process of self-initiation.
Only in this way can we confront our "I", shed its burdens, and achieve spiritual transformation and become true alchemists.
We warmly invite you to join us on Thursday, September 19th @6.00pm at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON M4W 2G8, Meeting Room 1
